First Impressions

As my taxi curved along the palm-fringed roads toward Kovalam, the salty air mixed with the faint aroma of herbal oils. Every signboard seemed to point to a wellness center, but instead of feeling “touristy,” it felt like the city was living and breathing Ayurveda. My first stop was a heritage resort overlooking the sea. The receptionist handed me a glass of warm herbal water instead of the usual chilled juice—and somehow, that tiny gesture set the tone for what was to come.

My clumsy hands didn’t do justice to the craft, but it gave me a new respect for the practitioners dedicating their lives to this science.


Food For the Soul (Literally)

Meals here were as much medicine as the treatments. At Manaltheeram Ayurveda Beach Village, I sat down to an open-air lunch where the buffet stretched to over 200 vegetarian dishes. Each plate was colorful—raw salads, lightly spiced curries, and herbal teas. No heavy fried foods, no coffee, no sugar—and yet I felt nourished in a way my usual diet never gave me.

Evenings often ended with simple meals at my resort: red rice, steamed vegetables, a side of coconut chutney. Eating became an act of mindfulness, and surprisingly, I didn’t miss the usual indulgences.


Why This Trip Stays with Me

When I left Thiruvananthapuram, I wasn’t just lighter in body—I felt lighter in spirit. The coastal sunsets were beautiful, the therapies luxurious, but what lingered most was the sense of being cared for, not just pampered. Ayurveda here wasn’t about quick fixes; it was about teaching me to live more in balance.

I came seeking relaxation but left with something deeper: a glimpse into a tradition that believes true wellness comes from aligning body, mind, and soul. And that, I think, is what makes Thiruvananthapuram more than a destination—it makes it a journey back to yourself.
