Kerala, with its rich traditions and cultures, celebrates a variety of festivals with great fervor and enthusiasm. These festivals not only add vibrant colors to the lives of the people but also offer a glimpse into the state's rich heritage and traditions to visitors. 1. Onam

  • When: August or September (Chingam month of the Malayalam calendar)
  • What: The most important and biggest festival in Kerala, Onam celebrates the return of the legendary King Mahabali. It's marked by elaborate feasts (Onasadya), traditional boat races (Vallam Kali), folk dances like Thiruvathira and Pulikali, and the decoration of homes with Pookalam (floral carpets).

2. Vishu

  • When: April (first day of Medam month of the Malayalam calendar)
  • What: A Hindu festival signifying the astrological New Year in Kerala. Vishu is celebrated with Vishukkani (the first thing seen on the morning of Vishu), Vishu Kaineettam (giving money), and enjoying a special feast.

3. Thrissur Pooram

  • When: April or May
  • What: Held in the Vadakkunnathan Temple in Thrissur, this spectacular event is known for its large procession of caparisoned elephants, mesmerizing Panchavadyam (five-instrument ensemble), and a grand fireworks display, attracting thousands of spectators.

4. Theyyam

  • When: October to May
  • What: Theyyam is a unique and ancient form of worship combining dance, mime, and music. It's celebrated in the northern districts of Kerala, where performers don elaborate makeup and costumes to embody deities and heroes.

5. Attukal Pongala

  • When: February or March
  • What: One of the world's largest gatherings of women, held at the Attukal Bhagavathy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram. Women prepare Pongala (a sweet dish) on the streets in a ritual offering to the deity.

6. Vallam Kali (Boat Races)

  • When: July to September, during the monsoon season
  • What: Traditional boat races held in various parts of Kerala, including the famous Nehru Trophy Boat Race in Alleppey. Teams compete in long snake boats (Chundan Vallam) cheered by large crowds.

7. Christmas

  • When: December
  • What: Celebrated with great enthusiasm, reflecting Kerala's significant Christian population. Churches are beautifully decorated, and midnight masses, carols, and festive displays mark the celebration.

8. Eid ul-Fitr and Eid ul-Adha

  • When: According to the Islamic lunar calendar
  • What: Celebrated by Kerala's Muslim community with special prayers, feasts, and social gatherings, marking the end of Ramadan (Eid ul-Fitr) and commemorating the willingness of Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son in obedience to God (Eid ul-Adha).
