How to Reach
Reaching the Andaman Islands, located in the Bay of Bengal, is an adventure in itself, with options available by air and sea. Here’s how you can get to this tropical paradise:
By Air
- Port Blair Airport (Veer Savarkar International Airport) is the primary gateway to the Andaman Islands. It is well-connected with major cities in India like Kolkata, Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore. Direct flights from these cities land in Port Blair, making air travel the most convenient and fastest way to reach Andaman.
- Once you arrive in Port Blair, you can take ferries or boats to explore other islands like Havelock Island, Neil Island, etc.
By Sea
- For those who prefer a more scenic route, traveling by sea is an option. Passenger ships operate from Kolkata, Chennai, and Visakhapatnam to Port Blair. The voyage takes about 50-60 hours (approximately 3 to 4 days) depending on the weather conditions and the ship.
- This mode of travel offers a unique experience with the sea all around, but it's less preferred due to the longer duration compared to flights. The ships are equipped with basic amenities and offer different classes of accommodation.
Things to Consider
- Booking in Advance: Whether choosing to fly or sail, it’s advisable to book your tickets well in advance, especially during the peak tourist season (October to March), as flights and ships can get fully booked.
- Permits: Indian nationals do not require a permit to visit the Andaman Islands. However, all visitors, including Indians, need permits to visit certain restricted areas like the Nicobar Islands and some parts of the Andaman Islands. These permits can be obtained on arrival at Port Blair.
- International Travelers: Foreign nationals are required to obtain a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) on arrival at Port Blair by air, which is valid for 30 days and can be extended up to 15 days with permission. Certain areas may be restricted for foreign visitors.
- Choosing how to reach the Andaman Islands depends on your preference for convenience versus the experience. Flying is quicker and more straightforward, while taking a ship offers a unique and leisurely journey across the Bay of Bengal.
