Reaching Arunachal Pradesh, nestled in the northeastern part of India, involves a combination of air, rail, and road travel due to its diverse and rugged terrain. Here's how you can reach this beautiful state:
By Air
- Nearest Airports: The state itself has a few small airports, but they are not well connected to major cities in India. The nearest major airport is in Guwahati (Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport) in Assam, about 450 kilometers from Itanagar, the capital of Arunachal Pradesh. Another nearby airport is Dibrugarh Airport in Assam, which is closer to eastern Arunachal Pradesh.
- From the Airport: From Guwahati or Dibrugarh, you can hire a taxi or catch a bus to reach Arunachal Pradesh. Helicopter services are also available from Guwahati to a few destinations within Arunachal Pradesh, depending on the weather conditions.
By Rail
- Nearest Railway Stations: Harmuti railway station in Assam is the nearest railhead to Itanagar, located about 33 kilometers away. For eastern parts of Arunachal, Tinsukia in Assam serves as a convenient railhead.
- From the Railway Station: From these stations, you can take a bus or a taxi to reach various destinations within Arunachal Pradesh.
By Road
- Entering Arunachal Pradesh: Arunachal Pradesh is well-connected to the rest of India via a network of national highways and state roads. Buses run by Arunachal Pradesh State Transport Services (APSTS) and other private operators connect major towns in Assam such as Guwahati, Tezpur, and Jorhat to Itanagar and other parts of Arunachal Pradesh.
- Permits: Visitors, including Indian nationals, need to obtain an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to enter Arunachal Pradesh. Foreign nationals require a Protected Area Permit (PAP). These permits can be obtained online or from Arunachal Pradesh government offices in Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati, Tezpur, and other specified locations.
