Given the airport's high altitude, it's advisable to rest and acclimatize upon arrival to avoid altitude sickness.
By Road
- Srinagar-Leh Highway (NH1): This route is typically open from early May to November and offers a scenic journey through the Himalayas, including the famous Zoji La Pass. The journey from Srinagar to Leh takes approximately 2 days, with recommended stops in Sonmarg or Drass and Kargil for overnight stays.
- Manali-Leh Highway: Open from June to October, this route is more challenging but equally rewarding, with stunning landscapes and high-altitude passes like Rohtang Pass and Baralacha La. The journey from Manali to Leh usually takes 2 days, with key stops at Jispa and Sarchu for acclimatization and rest.
By Rail
- The nearest major railway stations are Jammu Tawi and Pathankot, which are well-connected to various parts of India. From these stations, you can take a bus or hire a taxi to Srinagar or Manali and then proceed to Leh by road. Keep in mind that this option involves a longer journey time.

- Acclimatization: Ladakh's high altitude demands a period of acclimatization to prevent altitude sickness. Whether you're arriving by air or road, it's crucial to rest and gradually acclimate to the altitude.
- Permits: Foreign nationals and Indian citizens from outside Jammu & Kashmir need to obtain Inner Line Permits (ILP) for certain areas in Ladakh. These can be acquired online or from the District Magistrate's Office in Leh.
