Festivals in Rajasthan

Rajasthan, known for its vibrant culture and rich traditions, celebrates a myriad of festivals that attract visitors from across the globe. These festivals showcase the state's traditional music, dance, crafts, and the spirit of its people. Here are some of the major festivals celebrated in Rajasthan:

Pushkar Fair (Pushkar Camel Fair)

  • When: Typically in November, during the Kartik Purnima (full moon night).
  • What: One of the largest camel fairs in the world, it is not just about the buying and selling of livestock but also a cultural festival that includes music, dance performances, magic shows, and carnival rides. The Pushkar Fair transforms the entire town of Pushkar into a cultural hub.

Desert Festival (Jaisalmer)

  • When: Usually in February, three days before the full moon of Magh (according to the Hindu calendar).
  • What: Celebrated in the beautiful Thar Desert of Jaisalmer, this festival showcases Rajasthani folk music and dance, camel races, polo matches, and other activities that reflect the rich and colorful culture of Rajasthan.

Jaipur Literature Festival

  • When: Annually in January.
  • What: Known as the "greatest literary show on Earth," this festival brings together a diverse mix of the world's greatest writers, thinkers, humanitarians, politicians, business leaders, sportspeople, and entertainers on one stage to champion the freedom to express and engage in thoughtful debate and dialogue.

Teej Festival (Jaipur)

  • When: The festival falls in the Hindu month of Shravan (July/August).
  • What: Teej celebrates the arrival of the monsoon and is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Women dress in green clothes, sing traditional songs, and swing on beautifully decorated swings. The procession of Goddess Parvati in Jaipur is the main attraction.

Mewar Festival (Udaipur)

  • When: Coinciding with the festival of Gangaur, usually in March or April.
  • What: This festival marks the arrival of spring. It is especially famous for its cultural and traditional performances, and the grand processions that carry the idols of Isar and Gangaur, representing Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, through the streets of Udaipur.

Marwar Festival (Jodhpur)

  • When: In the month of Ashwin (September-October) according to the Hindu calendar, for two days during the full moon of Sharad Purnima.
  • What: Originally known as the Maand Festival, this event celebrates the heroes of Rajasthan through music and dance that mimic the battles and folklore of Rajasthani warriors.

Kite Festival (Jaipur)

  • When: On Makar Sankranti, 14th January.
  • What: The skies over Jaipur turn vibrant with kites of all sizes and shapes during this festival. Competitions are held, and people from all age groups participate in flying kites from dawn to dusk.
