Reaching Sikkim, nestled in the Eastern Himalayas, involves a combination of air, rail, and road travel, as the state does not have its own operational airport or direct railway connections. Here’s how you can reach this serene and beautiful state:
By Air
- Bagdogra Airport in West Bengal is the nearest airport, about 125 km away from Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim. It is well-connected with major cities in India like Delhi, Kolkata, and Mumbai. From Bagdogra, you can hire a taxi or take a helicopter service (subject to weather conditions and operational status) to Gangtok, which offers a quick and scenic way to reach the state.
By Rail
- The New Jalpaiguri Railway Station (NJP) in Siliguri, West Bengal, is the nearest major railway station, located approximately 120 km from Gangtok. It is well-connected to major cities across India. From NJP, you can hire a taxi or take a shared jeep to reach Sikkim. The journey offers picturesque views of the Himalayas and Teesta River.
By Road
- Sikkim is accessible by road from neighboring states and major cities. The state has a good network of roads, and buses run by the Sikkim Nationalized Transport (SNT) connect Gangtok with Siliguri, Darjeeling, and Kalimpong. Private taxis and shared jeeps are also available for more direct and flexible travel options.
Entry Permits
- Indian nationals do not require permits to enter Sikkim, except for certain restricted areas like Tsomgo Lake, Nathula Pass, and North Sikkim, where a Protected Area Permit (PAP) or Restricted Area Permit (RAP) is required. These can be obtained from the Sikkim Tourism offices in Siliguri, Gangtok, or through registered travel agents.
- Foreign nationals need to obtain an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to enter Sikkim, which can be applied for online or obtained at entry points like Bagdogra Airport, NJP Railway Station, and the border town of Rangpo.
